In response to the marathon post at 70sbig –
(just in case, i have a long background in endurance races and marathons)
Completing anything is worth a high-five and a smile. Especially if it a challenge for YOU; something you never thought possible or have had to change your whole life for (training every morning at 6am for 6 months and eating right).
This discussion forces us to ask the question – “What is important to me
and my health? What are my goals? WHY?” I want everyone to enjoy what
they do and feel good about it. Period. This discussion is only for
those that are wondering what fitness may really be, what is a good test
of someones will and endurance, and who is healthy.
That said, the overstated cultural amazement toward marathons is not necessary. To the Elites? Of course. But let’s break down the basic arguments to gain some better realistic perspective:
Marathoners are really fit and healthy:
In reality they are not at all. The average person at a marathon is either stick figure thin or overweight. Two extremes caused by illogical dietary and lifestyle choices. The high-carb, high-sugar, diet promoted by the majority of endurance participants is flat out wrong and harmful. A high-fat lower carb diet with half a s much training works beautifully.
Marathoners can run, or at least move their bodies for a long period of time. Most marathons are on roads and a flat course. Running in a straight line on a flat surface is not as hard as running technical trails with hills and rocks. Most run in terrible form and end up hurting themselves in training and then just enduring pain for over 3 hours at the race. They are not strong, their bodies are in hormonal chaos, and they most likely don’t have very good lung capacity because they go so slow it is a challenge of pain not of VO2 capacity.
Marathoners have a hard sport
If you are an elite and have looked in the mirror and told yourself you are going to train to be in the top 10 of your city, then yes, it will be a very hard road and I commend you.
However, the training for marathons is simple compared to many other sports. Stretch and Run. Run hills, run long, run fast. Training for other sports like gymnastics, crossfit, boxing, fighting, football, are much more difficult and demand the development of a much broader set of skills and tools. Along the way, marathoners always get several injuries because of their horrendous running form, training too much, and eating like a sugar-charged maniac. Everything is a skill. Running is a skill that we all loose when we put on weird shoes and trap our feet. You must look at running as a skill just like weightlifting.
The mud-runs like Tough Mudder and others are much more of an accomplishment because not only are you running along trails (which is much more technical) but you are forced to climb over walls, climb ropes, and various other exercises and tasks. Of course, anyone can walk both the Mud Event or the Marathon. But one of those two will have done a lot more in their 3 hours than the other.
Be proud of your back squat, your pullups, and your mobility. I think everyone should run a marathon just because. If you choose a good course it can be a lot of fun and something to strike off your list of awesomeness.
If any one of you AWESOME clients has wanted to do a marathon please don’t hesitate to contact the coaches and ask for their help. We can make marathon training fun!
